GLP #12: Behold ten great little panoramic views of London…

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

We’ll just let the views do the talking this time. If your favourite panoramic view didn’t make the cut, we expect to hear from you.

Central:

Trafalgar Roof Garden, Trafalgar Square, SW1A 2TS

A supreme crow’s nest overlooking the treasure chest of Trafalgar Square and other landmarks.

The Portrait Restaurant, National Portrait Gallery, St Martin’s Place, WC2H 0HE. Book here with TopTable.

Peering over Trafalgar square, Portrait Gallery’s rooftop restaurant comes into its own in the summer. Handy since it’s perched on top of one of London’s great little galleries.

West:

Galvin at Windows, Park Lane, W1K 1BE. Book here with TopTable.

Breathtaking 360° views of the city? Tick. 28 floors up the Hilton on Park Lane? Tick. Expensive? Sadly, yes tick. Worth every penny though? Indeed, tick. All in all, elegant French haute cuisine doesn’t get much higher.

East:

St Paul’s Cathedral, Saint Paul’s Churchyard, EC4M 8AD

Few Londoners have actually taken the time to marvel at the stunning views from the Golden Gallery right at the top of St Paul’s Cathedral. Whilst the building itself is a long way off being little, its vantage point at the top is very much a tiny affair. Just 530 steps to awesomeness.

The Monument, Monument

Hop, skip and jump up its 311 steps to get to a fantastic panoramic view of London. Price: only £3 for at least £30’s worth of fun.

Vertigo42, 25 Old Broad Street, EC2N 1HQ

Reservations only at the Vertigo 42 champagne bar at the top of Tower 42. Exclusive stuff. So ring up in advance if you’re planning on dazzling someone special with this bubbly treat. At a height of 182m the views don’t get much better.

North:

Primrose Hill, NW3 3NA

A sight for sore eyes. At 63m above sea level, this hilly oasis gives a fantastic viewpoint over Central London. Just before sunrise or sunset is the best time to admire this picturesque scene, as the city’s watercolours change before your eyes.

South:

Tate Modern Restaurant, Bankside, SE1 9TG. Book here with TopTable.

Travel up to the restaurant on Level 7 of the Tate Modern Art Gallery and admire the wide-scene from St. Paul’s to the Gherkin in high definition. A piece of art in and of itself.

Swan at the Globe Restaurant, 21 New Globe Walk, Bankside, SE1 9DT. Book here with TopTable.

Stunning views across the Thames and Tower Bridge served up on a theatrical platter.

Blueprint Café, 28 Shad Thames, SE1 2YD. Book here with TopTable.

The spectacular views of the London skyline sweeping along the river from Tower Bridge to Canary Wharf are filling enough. But save some room for their sumptuous European cooking. If you’ve time, pop down and visit the Design Museum underneath the restaurant. Always worth a visit.

That’s all for this week but we have some real treats over the coming weeks so be sure to come back and visit. Our digital door is always open. If withdrawal symptoms persist, however, you can always follow us for more adventures on Twitter at http://twitter.com/glpLondon
