Some places just have that certain something. The French have a phrase for it: ‘zat certain sumsing!’ Quirky spots you stumble upon and tell stories about. Lesser known marvels like bonkers bars, rickety restaurants or curious museums where the curator’s cats run wild. It’s not about price or prestige, no, no. It’s all charm and character. Places with personality. That’s a GLP, my friend. Come in and explore, then go out and explore.

Gordon's Wine Bar

Location

47 Villiers Street, London, WC2N 6NE

A delightful wine bar (oldest in London they say, a family run business since 1890) that transports you away from the hustle and bustle of London. It looks like an old and unused Victorian shop from the front but when you descend those steep little stairs you'll find yourself in a subterranean den - warm, inviting and rustic; welcomed by the nicely pungent smell of good and generous slices of cheese. Perfect with bread. And a huge wine selection, which you might expect. This is probably the most nominated place of all time on the GLP London Facebook page. In fact it definitely is, and you can see why. Gordon’s epitomises everything it means to be a GLP.

There’s respite in a lovely, and recently enlarged, outside section which has a BBQ every night in the summer and heaters in the winter. It’s easy to get to – a cork pop from Embankment – which also means it’s very popular. Get there early or on weekdays to get the best out of it, and try their very own Fat Bastard wine while you’re there… From your Beaujolais to your Bordeaux, this underground den has seen it all. It’s pretty much the worst kept secret in London… but for good reason.

For me, the most memorable place in London. I've never stayed for a drink there (it was always quite busy or I was the one who didn't have the time) but I've took some of my friends there just to show them how amazing is that place :)

Wonderfully atmospheric. A table in the cavern makes one feel conspiratorial or romantic, dependent upon your company I guess :-)

Get there early on for a table outside, grab a sharing plate of cheese and the first of many bottles, superb place for people watching, random conversations and destroying any supper plans...

Or have a lunch meeting there inside, underground in the catacomb, food is ok but the lack of mobile reception and low lighting makes for a relaxing time.

Have a play and get a feel, and we'll do the rest! This also helps us reward people who input most to the site.

We don't play the ratings back because we have an 'in' or 'out' system, but this helps us work out what gets in.
