Some places just have that certain something. The French have a phrase for it: ‘zat certain sumsing!’ Quirky spots you stumble upon and tell stories about. Lesser known marvels like bonkers bars, rickety restaurants or curious museums where the curator’s cats run wild. It’s not about price or prestige, no, no. It’s all charm and character. Places with personality. That’s a GLP, my friend. Come in and explore, then go out and explore.

The Perkin Reveller

Location

The Wharf at The Tower of London, EC3N4AB

http://www.perkinreveller.co.uk/

It's not often that a Yeoman Warder, or a Beefeater as they're more familiarly known, guards the gate of your chosen dining spot. At the Perkin Reveller, a  restaurant & bar that sits at the foot of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, this is the entrée - as the rest of the Tower is closed and the big man with the keys is the only one who can let you in.

The name comes from Chaucer; the theme running throughout the place. Famous for being one of the greatest poets and storytellers of all time, Geoffrey Chaucer was also Clerk of King’s Works between 1389 and 1391. During this time, he oversaw the construction of Tower Wharf, where the Perkin Reveller resides. Deep within Chaucer's Cook's Tale is described an apprentice chef called the 'Perkin Reveller' who had more than a small penchant for merriment and mischief, and whence comes the name.

The setting is unbelievable. In what was once a tourist laden cafe, where many years ago I had a slight altercation with the army - more on that here - a sparkling new joint has emerged that is squirrelled between two of the world's most famous and beautiful edifices. Look to one side and you're 5 metres from the grand old tower, 5 metres to the other and its bridge dazzles imposingly.

Inside it's split into three main areas, a cocktail bar, a restaurant and an outside terrace. Visually it's a blend of classic and modern, but sympathetically done so as not to look like a poor cousin of its surroundings, nor a minimalist sore thumb. The bar exemplifies this best, with a reclaimed church counter for the bar, looked over by a modern interpretation by Nick Archer of a classic 1390 wall painting from within the Tower, and surrounded by bespoke banquette seating. The restaurant is light and airy but not pretentious, but perhaps the crown jewel here (forgive us) is the outside area. Long reclaimed oak benches, each with a cunning games chest at the end, lattice the space with uninterrupted views either side. Perfect for a late summer cocktail.

And thus onto the refreshments. They don't mess around when it comes to attention to detail: from our utterly vague order of "something citrusy but not too bitter" was returned an incredible 'flip' with accompanying chutney, and a back story of meat preservation in the Caribbean of old. The food is classic British but done with a real contemporary flair - we can highly recommend the lamb. All local suppliers and nice things like that.

The setting alone makes the place well worth a visit, but combine with a free (but must be booked well in advance) trip to the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower itself and you'll have yourself an 'only in London' experience that not a lot of people in London will have ever done. As Geoffrey himself said “Time and tide wait for no man” - get yourselves down there.

I loved it! I went on a recommendation from a friend, and thought it was fab. Great staff, fantastic food and a unique location. I had a lovely terrine to start and an oxtail main course. Table next to us had a sharing plate, that looked really good. I am going to try that next time!

Outside space looks really good, and I am definitely going to be having a cocktail or two there in the summer!

Really great food and cocktails, charming serivce from a very enthusiastic but not intrusive team.

I can't wait to sit outside on the terrace and take in the views! Definitely planning on going for New Year. Good food, good drinks and views of the fireworks apparently(the staff were telling my partner and I).

Scrumptious food and friendly (if a little slow) service. The cocktail bar under Tower Bridge is a must-visit!

Brilliant venue, service a little (a lot) inattentive/slow to wait the table at first (had to ask for menus after 5-10 mins and no one came to take a drinks order), but very polite, professional and knowledgable.
Food was excellent standard - I highly recommend the wood pigeon and rhubarb starter and the British noggin for your first cocktail. good value, great view and service was discretionary.

Brilliant place, average food, bad service. Which was a real shame as it's such a stunning venue.

If they improve the service and a few of the main courses then it would be brilliant.
